HAPPY HOUR – IT’S MARDI GRAS – SO, SHOW SOME GENITALIA AND GET THE BEADS

First of all, you may be asking yourself, “When is Mardi Gras 2012?”

Mardi Gras 2012 falls on Tuesday, February 21.

The Mardi Gras season really kicks off, however, with the 25th anniversary of a very unique satirical parade called Krewe Du Vieux. This parade is a can’t miss, the only parade to go through the lower French Quarter and the Marigny Triangle, and is a very interesting with some hilarious adult and satire themes. This, the first parade, starts Saturday, February 19th at 6:30 PM.

Popular practices include the wearing of costumes, masks, overturning social conventions, sports competitions and parades with participants and spectators enjoying all types of jovial and alcohol inspired behavior. For many, this period is a time of revelry prior to the austere Lenten season. Currently, celebrations focus less on the religious aspects of the festival events and almost totally are directed towards both the commercial and the secular.

New Orleans, Louisiana, due to its' French colonial heritage, has become internationally famous as the Mardi Gras celebration capital city in the United States. The city's historic French Quarter is the epicenter of these festivities. One of the lasting rituals evolving from New Orleans during the early 1900s was the baring of breasts by women in exchange for beads or other trinkets. This custom has now become popular with both genders and may or may not involve the exposing of breasts, buttocks or genitalia.

While all of these galas are exceptional and fun to participate in, there is one more jewel in the Mardi Gras crown to mention. On Mardi Gras day the Annual Bourbon Street Awards Show presents the ultimate costume contest. This you have to see to believe. The show begins at noon at 800 Bourbon Street corner of St. Ann (OZ). According to their site the awards categories include: Best Drag, Best Leather, Best Group and the Grand Prize Best of Show with 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category. A $500 prize is also awarded for the Best Overall Costume.
