How are we going to expect a cure or a vaccine for the biggest of these money makers?
Those are the two main revenue producing illnesses and there are a myriad others but it is clear that special interests both the health care conglomerates of insurance and healthcare providers and the pharmas will see to it that no effective cure or vaccine is developed and put to use any time soon…follow the money, they say.
Considering that 1.4 million in the US are diagnosed with cancer each year and more than 1 million people are living with HIV in the USA; you are talking about a rough expenditure of anywhere between $50,000 and $100,000 per life-year gained, according to 49% of respondents. That's a number often referred to in similar literature, Dr. Neumann notes. However, the implicit value oncologists put on one year of life gained may be much higher; other studies found that doctors placed it at $200,000 and even $300,000, he adds.
With HIV it varies, but we have to take into consideration that the drugs listed below usually are prescribed in a combination of two or more of each therefore the total cost of meds per month is quite high.
The average cost of HIV treatment is $14,000 to $20,000 a year,” says Michael Kolber, MD, a professor of medicine and director of the Comprehensive AIDS Program and Adult HIV Services at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Florida. “If you’re paying $1,000 a month, you’re doing really well.”
Important Fact! - Prices will vary depending where they are purchased and how they are paid for. Mail-order pharmacies may be cheaper than your neighborhood pharmacy for instance. The prices given here are for estimates and comparisons only. Check with your local pharmacy and your drug insurance to find out just how much your HIV medications will cost you.

So that if we were to pick the average spent on treatment of these two illnesses alone we would have a yearly expenditure of appx. $75,000 multiplied by the number of people afflicted: 2.4 X $75,000 = $180,000,000. That my friends is quite a bit of money…it is the goose that laid the golden egg, the sacred cow that can roam the streets of our budget like a bull inside a crystal store.
But the promise of a cure or a vaccine doesn’t stop at the money end…it is also made worse by the ideology of Fundamentalist-Evangelical and other less radical religions who think that each and every illness humans suffer is a punishment from God. In particular the gays suffering from contracting HIV are the most affected by this type of condemnation…”they have HIV because they are being punished by God for their immoral behavior” that is what they will tell you and it is downright wrong and harmful…even immoral on their part to pass judgment and speak for God.

THE 1 PERCENT IS SETTING THE THEATER ON FIRE AND BLOCKING THE EXITS TELLING THE PEOPLE INSIDE THEY CAN’T SCREAM AS THEY BURN TO DEATH
Mayors and law enforcement authorities across America got it all wrong.
IT IS ALL ABOUT FREE SPEECH – NOT PROTECTING THE 1 PERCENT
There should not be any need for any kind of restrictions to free speech other than not yelling “FIRE” in a crowded theater. There can’t be any requirements for permits nor should there be any conditions forced upon those who wish to exercise that precious Constitutional right…in other words – Mayors and law enforcement can’t tell people when, where and how they can protest.
To draw an analogy of what is really happening: The 1% has set fire to the theater and blocked all the exits and the people inside have been told they can’t yell and scream while they are burning to death.
I know that this is impossible to ask of those who are protecting the interests of the 1% and not the people they represent…they would much rather have complete control as they do now and limit free speech by requiring permits, dictating what hours and where this right can be used.
But what these servants of the 1% don’t realize is that the minute you take away generators, destroy tents, pepper spray people and beat them up, free speech ceases to exist.
Winter is almost upon us and it would be suicidal to remain exposed to the elements in those northern cities; so for the time being let’s call it a win for the 1% but even as they gloat and celebrate this illusionary victory…the real onslaught of rage and discontent will not disappear; on the contrary – it is going to grow and it will return at ten times the numbers it is now.
So come this spring there will be a resurgence of the Occupy Wall Street protests and it will be unstoppable…rather than thousands of people demonstrating there will be millions and I like to see these courageous mayors arrest and jail hundreds of thousands of people…it is unrealistic and impractical unless you put them in stadiums as they did in Cuba during one of their repression sweeps to defend the 1% that is the totalitarian-communist regime.

Thanks for the GREAT post. It is nice to see someone who cares... However, if you do the math again... 2,400,000 X $75,000 is actually $180,000,000,000! Even MORE than you indicated. I am HIV positive and doing "well" and my yearly drug cost is just over $84,000. And that does not include doctor visits!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the information!

Thanks for the comment Jason...actually I knew the math was not accurate but I was being conservative lest somebody accuse me of exaggerating. I know it is worse than most people think...my dad was a diabetic and then had cancer and his med bills before he died were in the tens of thousands of dollars and Medicare didn't really cover all of it.
