I haven’t put my two cents worth in on this issue up until now. I was waiting to see how far these dastardly, intellectually challenged individuals would take their shake down scheme. I suspected as much judging by the last time they held the President hostage and denied unemployment compensation extensions unless they also received an extension of the Bush tax cuts for the very wealthy.
I can see where they are going now and I am commenting: The last shutdown cost taxpayers $800 million, including $400 million in wages to federal workers who did not report to work, according to About.com. However, during the first shutdown in 1995 800,000 non-essential workers were furloughed without pay for five days, according to AOL News.
This new Republican-Teahadist blackmail will cost Americans and the US more than
And that is a conservative estimate as that was the cost of the shutdown in 1995…surely today would be easily twice as much.
That is a shitload - 20 Brink’s armor truckloads of these!
What are we getting in return? Why are the Republicans insisting on this? Because they have all this ideological and culture war issues, because they don’t understand how the economy works and because they don’t care if they hurt Americans and destroy the country…they are going to have it their way or else. Very patriotic of them, isn’t it for the party that claims a divine link to God and exclusive lineage to the Patriot Founding Fathers? So what that means is that they want to attach to it all these radical, right-wing, religious fanatic ideas and measures. Anti-abortion laws, repealing the Health Care Reform, Dismantle Social Security, undermine the economy so there are more unemployed and they can then win the 2012 election…and the list goes on. Do you really want them to get away with this? And, if you let them, they will be back with another blackmail type of situation next year and then too they will be emboldened enough to eliminate Social Security and Medicare-Medicaid…At this time it is not likely to happen but if we keep giving in and bending over to accommodate and compromise they will have won..
Veteran’s services would stop

With the government looking like it's heading towards a shutdown as Friday approaches, many are wondering what exactly a shutdown would mean to them.
Based on the last government shutdown, there could be wide-reaching effects. According to AOL News, some immediate effects, such as the closing of national parks and museums, would be easily seen, while other services may only see delays.
A government shutdown occurs when a government discontinues providing services that are not considered "essential." Typically, essential services include police, fire fighting, armed forces, utilities and corrections. Interestingly, Congress and the President are exempt from the furlough and continue to receive compensation despite the fact that other services are suspended.
From Congress.org:
Under Article I, Section 6 of the Constitution, members of Congress "shall receive a compensation for their services, to be ascertained by law, and paid out of the treasury of the United States."
