DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY WE “LEFTIES” ARE NOT ENTHUSIASTIC?
Come on, give me a break! The Obama administration and the Democratic Party are very scared of the prospects of losing big time in the upcoming November elections. They are more than scared…they are now beginning to understand that it is almost inevitable that they will suffer losses…by how much and how big? It all depends on us “progressives/liberals” or what is generally thought as “the base of the Democratic Party”.
Whether we turn out in overwhelming numbers to vote depends entirely on how motivated and enthusiastic we are come next November. Yet, we are told by Mr. Gibbs that we are “the professional left” who is not going to be happy unless we have Canadian style health care, etc. His point that we should be more than grateful for the miserly crumbs we have received and we should celebrate the accomplishments our President has so far obtained.
Pardon me, Mr. Gibbs, excuse me, Mr. President…but I thought the whole idea of electing you was because we needed “CHANGE”. From where I stand, I don’t really see any significant change in much of anything…if there has been some anemic, almost laughable healthcare legislation it represents a great opportunity missed…you have allowed it to slip away because you were much too concerned about protecting those very insurance companies that should be put out of business for making profits out of people’s misery…that is unquestionably one of the reasons we are pissed…it is the missed opportunity to incorporate REAL HEALTH CARE REFORM with a PUBLIC OPTION…although I would have preferred to have UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE a la Canada.
In the financial arena we are seeing pretty much the same thing…the Obama administration is too concerned with not hurting those super rich types and not stepping on many of the toes of the big boys. So that the realities are we got another watered-down legislation that does not do anything about “TOO BIG TO FAIL”.
We are not too pleased either with your sluggish actions when it comes to granting gays EQUAL RIGHTS and we are still puzzled how a man such as Obama who is the product of a mixed race marriage could not understand that years ago the union of his parents was considered a crime in some states…much the same way that gays are treated in the majority of the states and across the country. HUMAN RIGHTS is not an issue to be put up to a vote much like racial equality was not put up to a vote…because in America the majority rules but the minority has rights…and that is something that everyone seems to forget…including our President when he doesn’t support SAME SEX MARRIAGE. And DADT is still not repealed…how much longer do we have to wait to have the same rights as everyone else?
Latinos too are not entirely pleased…time and time again Hispanics have been asked to be patient because there are other issues of more importance…and we have been asked to wait longer, to put our grievances in the back burner…that now is not the time. Really Mr. President? When is it going to be convenient to deal with Immigration Reform?
Don’t think for a moment that we haven’t noticed how far up you jump whenever FOX or any of the right-wing hate mongers raise accusations…you jump and you do it high…we saw ACORN’s demise and Ms. Sherrod forced to resign after you got caught up in the lies of the FOX fabricated-altered-edited videos…no, it was not a mistake on your part…it was caving in to the demands of these right wing fanatics only to back pedal it later when it was found out the damn things were doctored up. How embarrassing Mr. President…and Ms. Sherrod is gone and so is ACORN.
Liberals like me are generally peeved that the opportunity has been squandered. Yes, squandered: I know I’m supposed to talk about all the accomplishments and victories and how things would have been much worse if, say, McCain-Palin won. That’s a given and it’s not good enough. You see Mr. President, we went and voted in 2008 for what we thought was going to be an Alpha male, an energetic supporter of progressive issues. What we got was a pragmatic, professorial, conciliatory and meek President. Yes, we wanted you to step on some toes, we wanted you to fight the battles of the common man, we wanted, we wanted…but all we got was this pathetic effort to reach bipartisan consensus, this compromising and generous person who thinks that because he is President he has to be timid and accommodating. If you have learned anything by now Mr. President at least you should be aware that there is no way you are going to please the Republicans and they are not going to abandon their recalcitrant opposition to progressive ideas and what is worse: they will continue to try to dehumanize you and to make you fail…that is the whole reason for their existence at the moment.
So, Mr. Gibbs, Mr. President: We “professional lefties” are expected to talk about your accomplishments and celebrate your gains…as meager and as laughable as these are…but please stop bashing us for not being enthusiastic because we might get even more pissed and not vote at all. Of course we would not think of voting Republican ever…but you have to understand that we are not exactly pleased either. If we vote it would be because the alternatives are scary…I don’t want to see a Rand Paul or a Sharon Angle in our Capitol and I shit in my pants when I think of a Sarah Palin Presidency in 2012.
