SPEAKING IN TONGUES

SPEAKING IN TONGUES

WHAT A CROCK!

Tower of Babel

It is bad enough that we have to “believe” that the word of God is real and it is recorded in these supposedly “holly” Scriptures. The amount of mumbo-jumbo within these is incredible. The terrible and deliberate effort made by these writings to mislead and attract people into some blissful state with the promise of “SALVATION” is to me cruel and disingenuous.

Salvation from what, I ask? Salvation from death, from some horrible fate we would suffer once our physical bodies cease to exist? Is this some kind of a joke? It takes balls to claim that anyone, any living human being actually knows what happens to us after our demise. To fabricate, to construct all these myths about the hereafter is just ridiculous.

Not is it just absurd but in my opinion it is a terrible and cruel joke played upon those who are weak of mind and easily misled. These are people who for either lack of intelligence or laziness are not capable of thinking for themselves so they look for answers from others. The religions give them those answers, all encapsulated, gift wrapped and ready for consumption. It is instant retribution at its best.

We all know that we have but a very short period of time in which to live our biological lifespan. It is no more and no less than the life expectancy and circumstances allow us to do so. We may outlive our own children even or perish young in an accident or cataclysm. But the fact remains that if we are born, we must die.

And what better way to exploit this feeling of insecurity, the fear of the unknown and the application of all these made up conjectures and scenarios that are out of Stephen King and are meant to scare the shit out of those who actually pay attention to them?.

There is this guy you can watch actually speaking in tongues…He is so full of shit, talking about how he was “saved” and baptized and warmth and love started to pour over him. His testimonial is nothing more than an ego trip and mental masturbation. (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8208398286724828918#)

There is seldom one particular thing that convinces you to become an atheist. It is n accumulation of little things that you find unconvincing that build up over time. Eventually you get to the point that you have to ask yourself why you really believe and what good evidence is there for it. When you ask yourself those questions honestly and apply the bullshit filter that you apply to every other thing you don't believe, you just come to the conclusion that there is simply no good reason to believe in religion.

Faith is a feeling, a passion that can’t be explained. It is an insistence of convincing yourself of something that is not factual or can be proven by either reason or science. Therefore faith is the lack of reasoning. It is a feeling, a passion and not one person can prevent you from feeling it or practicing it. It is your choice: If you want to wallow in a mud puddle of ignorance and superstition go ahead, do it, but don’t insist in taking me there with you. As I have said before: You may opt to believe in green unicorns from Tasmania for all I care, and you may hang upside down from the chandelier in order to practice your faith; I really don’t give a flying fuck. But don’t tell me that I am less, or not worthy, second class citizen, or cursed, or damned. That implies that you are superior to me for the strangest of all reasons: you have faith and that I will not stand for.

One supposedly Christian denomination that does employ this deceitful practice is the Pentecostal. Another is the Mormons; although all during my brief affiliation with LDS I never witnessed anyone actually doing it.

I have also witnessed “someone possessed” during a Santeria ritual (at my house hosted by my ex-wife) it is very similar. What actually happens here is a form of self-induced hypnosis that the person brings on to him/herself in order to “feel good” The glands that secrete the substance to make you feel good go into overtime, much in the same way that they do when you eat chocolate or have a sexual orgasm.

In my opinion, most of these people do it because they need validation. They stand in front of the congregation and start to speak in tongues. For a brief period of time, they are the center of attention, their egos are boosted and they feel good. They say they have received the “blessing of the holy spirit” but it is nothing more than an ego trip which in the inconsequential and crass lives is a big deal. They get the undivided attention of their friends and piers and for a brief period of time they are “the shit”.

I speak, read and write five languages. I recognize as a linguist some of the phonetic applications these people are practicing. It is incoherent and totally fabricated. It follows no pattern other than a spontaneous formation of sounds from the vocal chords and the mouth. It is futility at its best.

  1. That's a really good point about the speaking in tongues being just a ploy for more attention. Like when someone is telling a story and as the listeners get more into it, he gets more and more animated.

To me, it's always seemed convincing yourself that any of these religious stories are factual would take a huge effort, they're just so fantastical. But apparently not!

  2. Much to your surprise, I am pentocostal and do speak in tongues. The problem is that when this act is perform, it must be done in private! Publically speaking in tongues is very disturbing to me. I have heard preachers on TV actually FAKE the act so bad it made me furious. Speaking in tongues is for the spiritual development of the individual not for showing off! People who show off are disgusting and are trying to bullshit you! The only "saved" they are, should be a saved place in a mental institution. Sorry if I have disappointed you but that that's the way it is. I still LOATHE the christian religion as it is practiced today.....NOT as it was in the first century. We have all been bullshited for far too long! I still like your post and respect your beliefs!
