About the Brazilian People

The Brazilians are composed of many races and ethnic groups. In general, Brazilians trace their origins from four sources of migration: Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians. Historically, Brazil’s population always experienced large degrees of ethno-religious intermarriage, mutual assimilation of cultures, syncretism and, above all, racial miscegenation. Since 1500, miscegenation between the country's indigenous peoples, Portuguese settlers, and African slaves took place.

Beginning in the 19th century, Brazil opened its borders to immigration: people from over 60 countries migrated to Brazil. Millions of European and Asian immigrants arrived between 1870 and 1953. Brazil has received the third largest number of immigrants in the Western Hemisphere, after the United States and Argentina.

The country has both the largest white population in the Tropics and population of African descent outside Africa. Brazil has the largest Lebanese descendant population outside Lebanon, the largest Italian descendant population outside Italy, the largest Japanese descendant population outside Japan, as well as the second largest German descendant population outside Germany (after only the United States).

The Brazilian passport has been the most sought-after illegal passport on the black market due to the ethnic and culturally mixed make-up of Brazilian society.
