We are a dysfunctional society
We might as well come to terms with this. We are, as a nation one of the most dysfunctional societies that have ever become a world power. But these previous countries/states were able to get to that position of prominence because of their homogeneity not in spite of it.
The United States of America is an anachronism, a contradiction, an unlikely candidate for success. We are plagued with disagreement and acrid antagonism. The very concepts we embrace so dear, such as is the one for freedom of speech and the press, causes this disagreement to be even more volatile.
When we set out to become a nation, the concepts the Founding Fathers had in mind to build a fair and prosperous nation were in place and distinctly clear as they even described them and put them into writing: it is called the Constitution.
But as imperfect as these men were, and as unfair the whole society was at the time; the spirit of a democratic type of society began to emerge. Mind you, 
the original signatories to the Constitution were only those who were educated and wealthy, thus making our roots more elitist and out of the reach of those who did not have either a place in society like women and other races, or were not wealthy enough to be able to participate in the democratic process as the Founding Fathers limited this right to those who were white landowners.
These very men, who conceptualized a society that was fair to all and looked upon all its citizens as equals, also had very clear and concise ideas as to what role religion should play in this new society and it was simply this: NONE. The Founding Fathers were very specific in the participation of religion in government and they provided the foundations for what we now prize and adhere to: THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.
But what is most impressive about this great social experiment of ours we call a Democratic Republic is that it is still working after existing for more than two hundred years. In spite of a lack of homogeneity, in the absence of conformity this nation has prospered and is thriving. I think that it is clear that what feeds the dreams, what fuels the fire of freedom, what nourishes the concept of equality and democracy is our diversity. As long as we continue to celebrate it, as long as we respect each other and honor the right to be different, we are going to continue to be America; the America for all, not the America for WASPHs. Notice I added an H at the end because it is now White-Anglo-Saxon-Protestant-Heterosexual to those elements that are always trying to undermine the concept of democracy.
It is because our diversity that we have become a great nation rather than in spite of it. We view “the melting pot” concept as a positive, at least most Americans do. We value our spirit of innovation and our propensity for individualism. Some of us are vigilant and always fighting to defend this concept and we are not without opposition. These very conformists, the so called Conservatives have brought us mediocrity and some of the worst elected officials in our political history, people like the incompetent George W. Bush and the charismatic airhead Sarah Palin. America has more than its share of idiots, xenophobes and homophobes but that makes our struggle even nobler.
I also know that some will accuse me of just repeating the talking points that the “liberal media” is putting out. But believe me when I tell you that I don’t adhere to “selective reasoning”. I try to read all I can from the Conservatives, including books written by Bill O’Reilly and I am in the mailing list of several Conservative organizations. Sometimes if makes me sick to the stomach to read the crap they put out. As for Sarah Palin, I do listen to what she says; I cling to every word and to every thought in my attempt to find any vestiges of intelligence.
Being a Conservative means to me that you want to maintain the status quo, you don’t like change and when I look around and see there are hundreds of things that not just need changing, they are screaming for reform then it negates any legitimacy that conservatism has.
Invade the Cayman Islands? What a stupid thing to say
I was watching Joe Scarborough this morning and he was saying that he spoke to an immigrant from India and the man said that he didn’t understand how America did not produce anything. Joe was saying that manufacturing had declined and we had become a service economy.
Whose fault is that? Blame can be applied to many on both sides but I can’t help to think of how the darling of Republicans; President Reagan encouraged this type of activity by giving corporations all kinds of incentives, tax breaks and even subsidies to close shop and take their manufacturing else where abroad. Not happy with just doing that, he also made it very attractive for companies doing business in America to take 
their corporate headquarters abroad to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.
One such place is the Cayman Islands. There are thousands of corporations that even in name only have their headquarters located there. Other places offer with their complicity a secure place to store away their wealth. Some of this treasure was ill-gotten, some of it is even the remnants of our 401K and pensions.
We invaded Iraq and it was a country that didn’t attack us, didn’t hide billions of dollars away from our government to avoid taxes and yet we have spent billions and billions in conducting an unnecessary war. The Cayman Islands have rendered us more harm than Iraq ever did and still hides away all these scoundrel’s operations with full complicity. Another is Switzerland. So, should we invade them? Of course not, but we can go after all these companies that are playing dirty with our country.
