Not surprising, he is Libyan diplomat Ali Abdussalam Treki.
Treki caused a big outrage today by branding homosexuality “not really acceptable”. Who the
fuck is he to say it is not acceptable. He is the one that is not acceptable.Furthermore, he decried countries that have a better record on rights, saying, “There are some countries that allow that, thinking it is a kind of democracy . . . I think it is not.” Of course, what else can he say? Considering that his boss Muhammar Khadaffi has been in power longer than any other head of state except the Queen of England.
I think that most everyone is aware of Libya’s appalling record on LGBT rights, so the news will comes as no surprise. Homosexuality is punishable by up to five years in prison and as a result many in Libya’s suffocated gay community either remain closeted or simply flee to Europe.
However, the news is rendered more distasteful given that Treki is the new President of the United Nations General Assembly, giving him the platform to share his views and spread his influence.
The UN is an organization that urges cooperation on issues of human rights, and is thought of as an organ of social progress, so we hope other voices in the Assembly can drown out the homophobic nonsense we have heard today. Good luck in trying to have the United Nations serve as an instrument to bring social progress and justice to LGBT with this asshole at its helm.
